More than 2.1 million people commute to work outside their municipality of usual residence, i.e. 40.9% of all employed persons with an identified place of work. Almost 560 thousand students attend school outside their municipality of usual residence, representing 39.1% of all students with an identified place of school. This is based on commuting and school data from the 2021 Census.
More than 1.5 million people commute to work in their municipality of usual residence, and the figure for students is slightly above 870,000.
Among the employed, persons working at their usual place of residence were also an important category, with more than 1 million persons in the 2021 Census, accounting for 19.6% of all employed persons with an identified place of work.
In all regions except Středočeský, the most significant category of place of work was persons working in the municipality of usual residence or in another municipality within the district. In the Středočeský region, the largest number of persons, more than 185 thousand, commuted to work in another region. This is 26.4% of all employed persons with an identified place of work who have their usual residence in the Středočeský region. The Karlovarský region has the highest share of persons working abroad compared to other regions, with more than 8.5% of persons with an established place of work.
For students, the most common place of the school in all regions was within the municipality of usual residence. The share of this category among students with an identified school location ranged from 44.8% in the Středočeský region to more than 95% in Prague.
