Census 2021

The number of working pensioners in Czechia has more than doubled in ten years

The CZSO has enriched the previously published results of the 2021 Census for population with the economic characteristics surveyed. Data on the economic activity of the population and a breakdown of the employed according to their status in employment, industry (branch of economic activity) and occupation (work performed) are available.

According to the 2021 Census results, the number of persons included in the labour force (employed and unemployed) increased from 5.1 million in 2011 to almost 5.6 million, which corresponds to 53.5% of the population with recorded economic activity. Compared to the 2011 Census, the number of working pensioners has more than doubled, already 566,000 in 2021, representing 10.7% of the total employed population. Outside the labour force, 46.5% of those with recorded economic activity were included, of which almost half were not working pensioners and just under a third were students.

More than a quarter (27.5%) of employed in Czechia with the identified branch of economic activity of their employer worked in industry. The highest share of employed in industry was achieved in the Liberecký Region (36.7%), while the lowest share was recorded in the Capital City of Prague (9.9%). Only 3.2% of employed with the identified branch of economic activity worked in agriculture, forestry and fishing.

The published results in the form of tables and cartograms up to the level of regions are available on the website scitani.cz. The data for all territorial units up to the level of municipalities and municipality or administrative districts are available in the CZSO Public Database.
