Type of housekeeping household

In the 2021 Census, 4.8 million housekeeping households were enumerated. Almost 60% of these formed family households. The majority of family households consisted of one-couple families, i.e. persons living in partnerships, most often in marriages. Lone-parent families (a single parent with a child) made up less than one fifth of family households.

Non-family households represent mostly one-person households. Their share on the total number of housekeeping households is growing, from 26% in 1991 it reached 39%. Non-family multi-person households made up only less than 2% of all households.

The significantly lowest proportion of family households (49.9%) and also the highest share of one-person households (39.1%) was recorded in the capital city of Prague. Almost every second household had only one person living there. Karlovarský, Ústecký, Liberecký and Moravskoslezský regions also had a lower share of family households than the national average. On the opposite side are Vysočina, Zlínský a Středočeský regions with the highest share of family households (over 63%).  The lowest share of one-person households was recorded in Vysočina (33.5%).
